The internet is a wonderful thing.
Helping everyone to select, at the click of a mouse, the service of their choice within their chosen budget.
Everyone should also be aware how misleading it can be - especially when considering their video producer.
Many video operators describe themselves as professional, but for most, their video business is usually just a lucrative hobby.
Their income doesn't rely on producing great videos - good or bad, their full time job guarantees their income.
Some have the ability to produce a good wedding video, but others lack an understanding of wedding procedures, their grasp of basic camera techniques - sound - colour balance - iris settings and the inevitable wobblycam shots and constant zooming will prove a source of embarassment and regret as time goes by.
Those glitzy online clips, using a great piece of music to enhance it can be deceiving, and It is tempting to book on the strength of these short clips alone - But, if you are passionate about your day, you will need to view at the least, clips from an actual wedding service, reception and speeches etc. to compare the consistency of colour, exposure, sound and the filming and editing style.
A wedding video is one of the most difficult productions to film properly. Back up is essential - Video tapes are fragile, easily lost and damaged, that's why we always use video hard drives as well, duplicating the precious shots from the day.
Great care is needed in selecting what must rank as the most precious heirloom you can have for yourself and to archive for future generations.
Look for qualified members of a trade association. This won't guarantee they have covered a lot of weddings, but it's a good start.
Always insist on visiting the video operators studio, online clips or home demos will always be an operators best work, but you need to watch a variety of your choice. You should feel reassured and relaxed in a professional studio and you should always ask to view a variety of productions from different wedding locations. By doing this, you can determine the consistency of production.
Are you comfortable with the camera crew? After all, they will be with you for virtually the whole day, so if you're not at ease with them, it will show on film. Many of our clients are now firm friends. We have experienced and shared these special days with hundreds of our 'friends' and welcome
the opportunity to become part of your big day too.
Ask a few simple questions . . . are they properly insured? professional indemnity & public liabilty coverage should be in place.
Have they got the required PPL and MCPS licences ? These are required in order to film the wedding service & reception venue and to film dances and dub your music later.
How much experience in filming weddings do they have? some 'specialist' operators, believe it or not, have only filmed a few. They have to start somewhere, but if you really value your memories, don't pay good money for them to practise on your wedding.
As in any industry, there are operators who work outside of professional standards. Some have even been known to copy the best productions available and overlay their own logo to send to clients.
Very misleading . . . and another good reason to visit the operators studio.
